Cystine Heart Agar with 5% Sheep Blood is a highly enriched culture medium designed to support the growth of fastidious microorganisms. Each sterile 100×15mm petri dish contains approximately 20mL of a nutrient base derived from beef heart infusion supplemented with L cystine and defibrinated sheep blood. L cystine supplies the sulfhydryl compounds required for the growth of organisms such as Francisella tularensis and other demanding bacteria that may not grow on standard blood agar. The sheep blood further enriches the medium by providing additional nutrients and growth factors while allowing observation of hemolytic reactions. Because the formulation does not contain strong inhibitors, it supports a broad range of organisms and is widely used in research, diagnostic microbiology, and specialized pathogen cultivation.
