Cytokeratin 14 (molecular weight 50 kD), an acidic (Type I) cytokeratinprotein, is one of the cytokeratin pair (50/ 58 kD) that distinguishstratified epithelial cell types from simple epithelial types. Cytokeratin 14is homogeneously expressed in all cells of the keratinizing squamousepithelium and is confined to the basal and parabasal cells in thenonkeratinizing squamous epithelium of the normal adult urinary tract.According to some studies cytokeratin 14 is a minor component of thehuman mammary gland. Monoclonal antibody to cytokeratin 14 may behelpful in distinguishing cells types of human mammary gland, thus itmay also be used to study histogenesis of breast carcinoma.
