Czapek Yeast Extract Agar (CYA) is a differential culture medium commonly used in mycology for the cultivation and identification of molds such as Aspergillus and Penicillium species. Each sterile petri dish contains approximately 30mL of medium composed of a Czapek mineral base with sucrose as the primary carbon source and enriched with yeast extract. The yeast extract supplies vitamins and trace nutrients that promote faster colony growth and improved sporulation compared with traditional Czapek Dox formulations. This medium enables researchers to observe colony morphology, pigmentation, sporulation patterns, and growth characteristics that aid species level identification. CYA is widely used in environmental monitoring, food microbiology testing, and fungal taxonomy studies.
