It acts as a weak competitive antagonist of α-ketoglutarate (α-KG), inhibiting multiple α-KG-dependent dioxygenases with a Ki of 10.87 mM. This compound increases reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, binds to and inhibits ATP synthase, and suppresses mTOR signaling. It also accumulates in human cancers with neomorphic mutations in IDH1 and IDH2 genes.
