Defibrinated Sheep Blood is a sterile laboratory supplement used in the preparation of enriched microbiological culture media. Each bottle contains 100mL of aseptically collected sheep blood that has been mechanically defibrinated to remove clotting factors without the addition of chemical anticoagulants. This process preserves the natural biological properties of the blood while preventing clot formation during media preparation. Defibrinated sheep blood is commonly added to base media such as Columbia Agar or Tryptic Soy Agar to produce Blood Agar Plates and Chocolate Agar. The blood supplies essential nutrients including hemin and other growth factors that support the growth of fastidious microorganisms. It also enables the observation of hemolytic reactions that assist in the identification of pathogenic bacteria.
