Description
A desmosine cross-link is formed from three allysyl side chains plus one unaltered lysyl side chain from the same or neighbouring polypeptides. Desmosine is responsible for the cross-linking of elastin. Urinary excretion of desmosine is a useful indicator of elastin breakdown resulting from increased elastase activity. It also acts as a biomarker of elastin degradation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
