Dichloran Glycerol (DG18) Agar is a selective low water activity medium used for the enumeration of xerophilic molds and osmophilic yeasts. Each sterile petri dish contains approximately 20mL of nutrient agar supplemented with 18% glycerol and the antifungal agent dichloran. The high glycerol concentration lowers the water activity of the medium, creating conditions favorable for organisms that thrive in dry environments such as flour, spices, cereals, and dried foods. Dichloran limits the spreading growth of rapidly growing molds, allowing slower growing colonies to remain visible and countable. Because of these properties, DG18 agar is widely recommended for environmental monitoring, indoor air investigations, and food microbiology testing where detection of xerophilic fungi is required.
