Digitonin is a glycoside obtained from Digitalis purpurea. It is a natural detergent that increases cell permeability by binding to cholesterol molecules, and has been shown to reduce tumor growth. In vitro, Digitonin enhances cell permeability by interacting with cholesterol in cell membranes, leading to increased cisplatin accumulation and reduced tumor growth. In vivo studies indicate that Digitonin, when administered intra-arterially at 5 mg/kg, enhances the tumor-growth retarding effect of carboplatin without altering liver parenchyma blood flow.
