Dihydroethidium, also known as DHE, is a peroxide indicator that penetrates cell membranes to form a fluorescent protein complex. After entering cells, it localizes mainly in the cell membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus. It produces inherent blue fluorescence (maximum excitation 370 nm, maximum emission 420 nm) and, after dehydrogenation, combines with RNA or DNA to produce red fluorescence (maximum excitation 300 nm or 535 nm, maximum emission 610 nm).
- Peroxide indicator
- Cell membrane permeable
- Localizes in cell membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus
- Produces blue fluorescence (Ex: 370 nm, Em: 420 nm)
- Produces red fluorescence after dehydrogenation and binding to RNA/DNA (Ex: 300 nm or 535 nm, Em: 610 nm)
