It is a commonly used solvent for hydrophobic pharmaceutical agents, exhibiting effective hydroxyl radical scavenging ability. Commercially it is produced by oxidation of dimethylsulfide (DMS) with dinitrogen tetroxide. It is a component of a wide variety of foodstuffs and beverages.
