Diphenyl Blue (Trypan Blue) is a cell-active dye, most commonly used for identifying dead cells. It is frequently employed to test cell membrane integrity and cell viability. Diphenyl Blue staining is a method used in tissue and cell culture. Deactivated cells or those with incomplete cell membranes are stained blue by Diphenyl Blue. Normal living cells with intact cell membranes, however, reject Diphenyl Blue and do not stain blue. Macrophages can phagocytose Diphenyl Blue, allowing it to be used as a living stain for these cells.
