Materials for five demonstrations: 800 mL Sodium Hydroxide solution; 50 mL Sodium Hydroxide, 3M; 1 L Hydrochloric Acid, 0.01M; violet, blue, green, yellow, orange and red indicators; and instructions

Use acids and bases with three indicators to create a rainbow of colors.

  • In a basic solution, phenolphtalein is red, p-nitrophenol is yellow and thymolphthalein is blue
  • These can be combined in various ways to create all the colors of the rainbow
  • If done correctly, students only see the acid or base being poured, adding to the impressive display
