- Doxycycline inhibits bacterial growth by preventing polypeptide formation via inhibition of at least one ribosomal subunit
- Known to reversibly bind the 30S ribosomal subunit and inhibit formation of the aminoacyl-tRNA/mRNA-ribosome complex
- Inhibits matrix metalloproteinases in many microorganisms
Applications
- Effective against the bacteria that cause Lyme disease, chlamydia, rickettsia and mycoplasma; suitable for antibiotic resistance testing and study of cellular mechanisms
