Ebselen inhibits 5-LO, CO, NADPH oxidize, and protein kinase C. It is a potent antioxidant. It possesses a unique glutathione peroxidase-like activity. It is also shown to be an inhibitor of free radical induced apoptosis and neuroprotective agent.
