Students will investigate presence of contaminants in a water sample.

  • Drinking water is routinely tested for contamination. If a screening tests positive, more sophisticated tests are required to determine whether harmful microbes are present
  • Students use PCR in multiplex format
  • Single PCR test detects presence of three separate, classroom-safe organisms
  • Analyzed on agarose gels

Experiment times:

  • Setup: 60 minutes
  • PCR: 120 minutes or overnight
  • Electrophoresis: 45 minutes
