Edwards Medium with 5% Sheep Blood is a selective and differential agar medium designed for the isolation and identification of streptococcal species from clinical specimens. The formulation contains selective agents such as crystal violet, esculin, and antibiotics that inhibit many competing organisms, allowing target streptococci to grow more effectively from mixed microbial populations. The addition of 5% defibrinated sheep blood provides essential nutrients for fastidious bacteria and allows visualization of hemolytic activity, which supports preliminary identification of streptococcal species. Each sterile plate contains approximately 20mL of agar poured to a consistent depth to ensure reliable colony growth and accurate diagnostic interpretation. These ready to use plates are commonly used in hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, and microbiology research facilities.
