Epithelial membrane Antigen (EMA), also known as milk fat globulemembrane protein, is present on the luminal surface of mammary glandepithelium. Although EMA is primarily located in mammary glandepithelium, other normal epithelia (e.g., lung) will also react against EMAantibody. Cells obtained from solid metastases and pleural effusionsaccompanying a breast cancer will react with EMA antibody. Humancolon carcinoma, osteosarcoma, kidney carcinoma, hepatocellularcarcinomas, adrenal carcinoma, embryonal carcinoma, liposarcoma, lungcarcinoma, and mixed parotid tumor do not stain with EMA antibody. Thecombination of positive staining for keratin with negative EMA can beused to phenotype the above-mentioned epithelial tumors.
