P/CAF(sometimes called KAT2B) is a transcription cofactor with a histone acetyltransferase (HAT) activity. Consistent with this protein playing a direct role in transcriptional regulation, P/CAF can acetylate core histones H3 and H4, chromatin proteins HMG17 and HMG I(Y), as well as human immunodeficiency virus Tat, transcription factor MyoD, and general transcription factors TFIIE and TFIIF. A role for P/CAF in cell growth and differentiation is suggested by its interaction in vivo and in vitro with p300/CBP, two large nuclear proteins that bind to sequence-specific factors involved in cell growth/differentiation. A role for P/CAF in cell division is also suggested by data showing that this protein competes with E1A for binding sites in p300/CBP to counteract E1A's mitogenic activity.
