The determination of steroid hormone receptors has become widely usedin the management of hormone-dependent cancers. The Estrogen Receptorcontent of breast carcinoma is a tool for both prognosis and response toendocrine therapy. Individuals whose tumors contain estrogen receptor aremore likely to respond to endocrine manipulation than those whose tumorsare estrogen receptor poor. Estrogen Receptor (ER) modulates cellularevents by binding estrogen response elements (ERE) when bound toestrogen in dimers. This results in the transcription of a number ofproteins, including ER. Protein synthesis occurs in the cytoplasm, afterwhich ER associates with chaperone proteins and is translocated to thenuclear membrane. The ER protein is transported into the nucleus throughutilization of ATP.
