The hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG) spacer arm imparts water solubility that is transferred to the biotinylated molecule. For example, antibodies labeled with NHS-PEG4- Biotin exhibit less aggregation when stored in solution as compared to antibodies labeled with reagents having only hydrocarbon spacers. Specific labeling of cell surface proteins is another useful application for these water-soluble and membrane-impermeable reagents.
