Fluid D is a sterile rinsing and diluting fluid formulated according to United States Pharmacopeia (USP <71>) sterility testing standards. Each 1 liter bottle contains a solution of 0.1% peptic digest of animal tissue supplemented with 0.1% Polysorbate 80 (Tween 80). This formulation is essentially Fluid A enhanced with a surfactant to support the testing of pharmaceutical products containing oils, fats, ointments, or lecithin. The surfactant acts as an emulsifier that reduces surface tension and disperses oily residues that could otherwise coat microorganisms or clog membrane filters. During sterility testing procedures, Fluid D is used to rinse the membrane filter after sample filtration, ensuring that bacteriostatic or fungistatic substances are removed before incubation in culture media. This step helps ensure accurate microbial recovery and reliable sterility results.
