Fluid Thioglycollate Medium (FTM) is a standard liquid enrichment medium used for sterility testing of pharmaceutical products and biological materials in accordance with United States Pharmacopeia (USP <71>) guidelines. Each bottle contains 1000mL (1 liter) of nutrient rich broth designed to support the growth of aerobic, anaerobic, and microaerophilic microorganisms. The formulation includes sodium thioglycollate and L cystine which act as reducing agents to create anaerobic conditions deeper in the medium while the surface layer remains oxygenated. A small amount of agar stabilizes the oxygen gradient by preventing convection currents. Resazurin serves as an oxidation indicator, turning pink in oxygen rich areas while the deeper anaerobic zones remain clear. This large volume format is ideal for high throughput sterility testing and routine microbiological quality control.
