Fluid Thioglycollate Medium (FTM) is a versatile liquid culture medium designed to support the growth of a broad spectrum of microorganisms including aerobes, obligate anaerobes, and microaerophiles. Each tube contains 5mL of sterile broth, making it suitable for small sample sterility testing, subculturing, or routine microbiological examinations. The formulation contains sodium thioglycollate and L cystine which reduce oxygen levels and create anaerobic conditions toward the bottom of the tube while allowing aerobic organisms to grow near the surface. A small amount of agar increases viscosity and prevents convection currents that could disrupt the oxygen gradient. Resazurin is included as a redox indicator, turning pink in oxygenated regions while remaining clear in anaerobic zones. The compact 5mL format is convenient for routine laboratory workflows.
