Furosemide (CAS 54-31-9) is a pharmacological inhibitor of the Na -K -2Cl co-transporter (NKCC) It acts primarily by blocking the activity of NKCC1 and NKCC2 transport proteins which mediate the active cellular uptake of sodium potassium and chloride ions By modulating ion transport furosemide inhibits neuronal swelling thereby attenuating epileptiform neuronal activity in adult brain tissue Additionally it displays anti-inflammatory effects via inhibition of cytokine (IL-6 IL-8 TNF- ) production from peripheral monocytes Furosemide is widely studied in biomedical research focused on epilepsy mechanisms inflammatory responses and renal sodium handling in disease states including cirrhosis
