Methyl palmitate is a naturally occurring fatty acid ester that acts as a potent inhibitor of IκB phosphorylation. It modulates macrophage activity to down-regulate pro-inflammatory mediators such as TNF-α and nitric oxide (NO), exhibiting anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic effects. It can inhibit LPS-induced Kupffer cells and rat peritoneal macrophages, as well as the phagocytic function of RAW cells. This compound is also antagonistic to muscarinic receptors and provides cardioprotective effects against ischemia/reperfusion injury in vivo. It is highly toxic against adult T. cinnabarinus.
