Human recombinant granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is a cytokine that stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of myeloid progenitor cells into granulocytes and macrophages. Secreted by activated immune cells such as T cells, macrophages, endothelial cells, and fibroblasts, GM-CSF promotes hematopoietic cell colony formation in vitro. Additionally, GM-CSF has been shown to regulate migration and proliferation in non-hematopoietic cells, including endothelial and certain tumor cell lines. Clinically, recombinant human GM-CSF is utilized to stimulate leukocyte recovery after chemotherapy and explored as an immunological adjuvant in vaccine trials for HIV-infected patients.
