Use basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) to support the maintenance of undifferentiated human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) (Xu et al. Nat Methods, 2005), stimulate hPSCs to form neural rosettes (Zhang et al. Nat Biotechnol, 2001). In addition, bFGF can improve proliferation of human mesenchymal stem cells and enhance chondrogenic differentiation (Solchaga et al. J Cell Physiol, 2005). bFGF activates JAK/STAT, PI3K, ERK1/2, and other receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) signaling pathways. It is involved in a variety of biological processes including cell proliferation, differentiation, survival, and apoptosis (Folkman & Klagsbrun. Science, 1987; Klagsbrun. Prog Growth Factor Res, 1989; Rifkin & Moscatelli. J Cell Biol, 1989). Human recombinant bFGF from STEMCELL is animal component-free and comes lyophilized with ≥ 95% purity; EC50 ≤ 5 ng/mL; endotoxin levels verified ≤ 1 EU/μg protein.
