IBMX (CAS 28822-58-4) is a methylxanthine derivative commonly employed in research as a non-selective inhibitor of phosphodiesterase (PDE) isozymes It inhibits PDE3 PDE4 and PDE5 with IC50 values of approximately 6 5 26 3 and 31 7 M respectively By inhibiting PDE activity IBMX elevates intracellular cyclic AMP (cAMP) and cyclic GMP (cGMP) concentrations thereby activating downstream cyclic nucleotide-dependent protein kinases Additionally IBMX antagonizes adenosine receptors blocking endogenous adenosine-mediated cellular effects In animal studies IBMX administration has been shown to modulate drug-induced behavioral sensitization highlighting its utility in neuropharmacological research
