Imidazoleacetic acid hydrochloride is a γ-aminobutyric acid receptor agonist. It acts as a non-competitive inhibitor of GABA-T, with a Ki value of 0.34 mM. This compound has been shown to increase the total free GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) in the brain and is intended for research use only. In vitro studies demonstrate that imidazoleacetic acid (3 mM) hydrochloride inhibits GABA-T in a non-competitive manner, with a Ki value of 0.34 mM. In vivo, when administered at 400 mg/kg (i.p.; single dose), it increases the total free GABA pool size in mouse brain without a concomitant increase in GABA biosynthesis from glutamate.
