The probability that a photon of light will be adsorbed by a solution is directly proportional to the concentration of the absorbing molecules, the thickness of the sample and the degree to which the molecules absorb light. This relationship is called the Beer-Lambert Law and is used in analytical chemistry to determine concentrations of various compounds spectrophotometrically.
