Innovating Science™ AP Chemistry Kits: Synthesis of Aspirin

Description
Includes
Materials for 15 groups: 25mL Acetic Anhydride UN1715 (2); 15g Salicylic Acid; 25mL Sulfuric Acid concentrate UN1830 (2); 25mL Toluene UN1294; teacher's guide; and student copy masters
In a reaction vessel, salicylic acid, acetic anhydride and sulfuric acid are mixed. The exothermic reaction will cause the temperature to increase to 70°-80°C. Once the reaction is complete, the vessel is cooled in an ice bath and the acetylsalicylic crystallizes out. This material is then recrystallized in toluene to purify the product. The product identity is comfirmed by melting point. The mass of the recrystallized product is used to determine the yield of the synthesis.
