Synthetic. 4-3-4-iodophenyl-2-2,4-dinitrophenyl-2H-5-tetrazolio-1,3-benzenedisulfonate sodium salt IPB have found application in clinical assays and cell proliferation assays that are based on a spectrophotometric measurement of dehydrogenase activities of cells. Disulfonated tetrazolium salt IPB, that produces a highly water-soluble formazan dye that proved to be extremely useful as a cell-viability indicator. IPB is reduced by reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide NADH to formazan in the presence of a redox mediator such as 1-methoxy PMS, which provides the basis to specrophotometric assays of NADH.
