Soft tissue protection is extremely important during the insertion of KE bone pins. Without soft tissue protection there is a tendency for soft tissue structures such as muscle, blood vessels, and nerves to be wrapped around the pin. This tendency is greatly increased with the use of raised threaded pins or drill bits. Other drill guides and tissue protectors will work when placing free standing pins. However, when placing pins in the middle of a KE frame, they can not be used.
