MRS Agar (de Man, Rogosa, and Sharpe) is a selective culture medium designed for the cultivation and enumeration of Lactobacillus species and other lactic acid bacteria. Each plate contains approximately 20 mL of nutrient rich agar formulated with peptones, yeast extract, dextrose, and polysorbate 80 to support the growth of fastidious lactic acid bacteria. The medium also contains buffering agents and selective components that suppress many competing microorganisms. MRS Agar is widely used in food microbiology, fermentation research, and probiotic quality testing where accurate recovery of Lactobacillus species is required. Colonies typically appear small, creamy, and circular after incubation under anaerobic or microaerophilic conditions, allowing reliable enumeration of lactic acid bacteria populations.
