Laminin is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of approximately 900 kDa found in the basement membrane of most tissues It is composed of three chains a1 1 and 1 It binds to collagen type IV and heparan sulfate playing a crucial role in the structure and function of the basement membrane In cell culture it primarily mediates adhesion between epithelial cells endothelial cells and hepatocytes and also promotes axonal outgrowth in neurons as well as differentiation and chemotaxis It is closely associated with cancer metastasis and highly metastatic cancer cells are known to express a high number of laminin receptors on their cell surfaces
