Lauryl Sulfate Tryptose Broth (LST) 2X is a concentrated, selective liquid medium designed for the presumptive detection and enumeration of coliform bacteria in water, dairy, and food samples. Each tube contains 10mL of double strength broth formulated to accommodate the addition of an equal volume of sample without reducing the effective nutrient and selective concentrations. Sodium lauryl sulfate inhibits gram positive organisms while allowing the rapid growth of coliform bacteria. Lactose acts as the fermentable carbohydrate source, where positive results are indicated by turbidity and gas production during incubation. This medium follows Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater and is widely used in the Most Probable Number (MPN) technique for environmental monitoring, food safety testing, and routine water quality analysis.
