Lauryl Tryptose Broth (LTB) 2X is a double strength selective liquid medium formulated for the detection and enumeration of coliform bacteria in water, wastewater, and food samples. Each container is filled with 100mL of nutrient rich broth containing tryptose, lactose, and sodium lauryl sulfate. The double strength formulation allows laboratories to add an equal volume of aqueous sample without diluting the medium below effective working concentrations. Sodium lauryl sulfate suppresses the growth of non coliform organisms while lactose acts as the fermentable carbohydrate source. A positive presumptive result is indicated by turbidity and gas production during incubation. This medium is widely used as the first stage of the Most Probable Number (MPN) method for routine water quality monitoring, environmental testing, and food safety analysis.
