LB Agar (Lennox) with Ampicillin is a selective microbiological medium designed for the isolation of plasmid transformed Escherichia coli in molecular biology applications. Each plate contains 20mL of Lennox formulation LB agar supplemented with 100 µg/mL ampicillin, the standard concentration used for maintaining plasmids that carry the beta lactamase resistance gene. The antibiotic inhibits cell wall synthesis in susceptible bacteria, preventing growth of non transformed cells while allowing resistant colonies to develop. The Lennox formulation contains a reduced sodium chloride concentration compared with the Miller formulation, providing a balanced ionic environment compatible with many cloning workflows and antibiotic selection protocols. This ready to use medium simplifies laboratory procedures by eliminating the need to add antibiotics to molten agar during plate preparation.
