Luteolin (CAS 491-70-3) is a naturally occurring flavonoid characterized by anti-inflammatory antioxidant and chemopreventive properties Mechanistically it suppresses lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-mediated inflammation by inhibiting production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF- and IL-6 reducing inducible nitric oxide synthesis and blocking NF- B and AP-1 signaling pathways Additionally luteolin impedes TNF- -induced cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression In preclinical in vivo studies it exhibits antiproliferative activity against tumor cell proliferation exemplified by growth inhibition in Lewis lung carcinoma models Consequently luteolin is widely investigated in biomedical research targeting inflammation oxidative stress and cancer biology
