Alkali Scientific MacConkey Agar w/1% Maltose Plate, 10/Pk
SDP

Catalog No. 5000662146
Encompass_Preferred

MacConkey Agar with 1% Maltose is a modified selective and differential medium designed to distinguish Gram negative enteric bacteria based on maltose fermentation rather than lactose. The formulation retains the classic MacConkey selective agents bile salts and crystal violet, which inhibit Gram positive organisms, along with the neutral red pH indicator. Maltose serves as the primary carbohydrate source, enabling differentiation of organisms capable of fermenting this sugar. Bacteria that ferment maltose produce acid, lowering the pH and causing colonies to appear pink to red with possible bile precipitation. Non fermenting organisms remain pale or colorless. This variant is especially useful in differentiating species such as Proteus vulgaris (maltose positive) from Proteus mirabilis (maltose negative).
