Malt Extract Agar with Chloramphenicol is a nutrient rich culture medium widely used for the isolation, enumeration, and cultivation of yeasts and molds. Each tube contains approximately 30 mL of agar and is commonly supplied as a pour tube, allowing laboratories to prepare one standard petri dish or multiple smaller plates. The medium is based on malt extract, which provides abundant carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and minerals that support rapid fungal growth. Its naturally acidic pH favors fungi while discouraging bacterial contamination. To further enhance selectivity, the formulation includes chloramphenicol, a heat stable broad spectrum antibiotic that inhibits many Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. This combination allows reliable recovery of fungal organisms from environmental, food, or laboratory samples.
