Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA) is a selective medium widely used in microbiology for the isolation and identification of staphylococci and other salt-tolerant organisms. The medium contains 7.5% sodium chloride, which inhibits the growth of most non-salt-tolerant bacteria, and mannitol, which can be fermented by certain bacterial species. The phenol red pH indicator turns yellow when mannitol is fermented, aiding in the differentiation of pathogenic strains of staphylococci, such as Staphylococcus aureus.
