Description

Used to visualize acidic mucins, which are found in the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts.

  • The stain is effective at pH 1.0 for staining sulfated acid mucopolysaccharides and glycoproteins, making it useful for diagnosing conditions such as Barrett’s esophagus, mesothelioma, atherosclerosis, and adenocarcinomas
  • It is important to note that Alcian Blue does not stain neutral mucins, and for visualizing neutral mucins, PAS (Periodic Acid Schiff) staining can be used as a counterstain
