Meropenem is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It is a carbapenem antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis. It acts by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), enzymes involved in the final stages of peptidoglycan synthesis in the bacterial cell wall. This interference leads to structural instability and eventual cell lysis.
Meropenem may be used as a tool to study antibiotic susceptibility patterns of bacteria or as a selective agent in culture media to isolate bacteria sensitive to this antibiotic.
