Methenamine hippurate, also known as Hexamine hippurate, is an orally active urinary antiseptic agent. It possesses a broad antibacterial spectrum and is effective against most common urinary tract pathogens. In vitro, this compound acts as a urinary antibacterial agent by releasing formaldehyde and is excreted in the urine.
- Demonstrates activity at pH 5 to 6 against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Aerobacter aeroaenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Proteus vulgaris.
- Shows a wide range of action at pH 7.4 against Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus haemolytic.
- Its action is more effective than methenamine alone, hippuric acid alone, or sulphadiazine.
