Detecting viable bacterial cells is important for analyzing bacteria contamination in food and evaluating the cleanliness of facilities to prevent food poisoning and infections. Bacterial cell detection is also used for screening sanitizing agents and drug resistance detection. Generally, counting the number of colonies on an agar plate is the standard method for determining the number of viable bacterial cells in samples, which may take days to visualize. The Microbial Viability Assay Kit-WST can be used to determine the number of viable bacterial cells in a sample in only a few hours by a colorimetric method. The electron mediator in the kit receives electrons from viable bacterial cells and transfers the electrons to WST, a water-soluble tetrazolium salt. Bacterial cell viability can then be determined by monitoring the color intensity of WST formazan dye. This assay kit was co-developed with the Biotechnology and Food Research Institute, Fukuoka Industrial Technology Center.
