Free acid form of the cytoprotective PGE1 analog misoprostol. Misoprostol prevents NSAID-induced gastric ulceration. The free acid form is active in cell free assays and in cell culture and receptor preparations (receptor binding assays etc.). The methyl ester form (misoprostol, BML-PG051) is a prodrug and must be hydrolyzed via intracellular or other esterases in order to display biological activity. Alternative name: (+/-)-15-Deoxy-(16R,S)-16-hydroxy-16-methyl-prostaglandin E1. Purity: ≥98% (TLC). Solubility: Soluble in 100% ethanol (>15mg/ml) or DMSO (>20mg/ml). Long Term Storage: -20°C.
