ELISA

The Rat Matrix MetalloProteinase 8 (Rt MMP8) ELISA quantitates Rt MMP8 in rat serum, plasma, or cell culture medium. The assay will exclusively recognize both natural and recombinant Rt MMP8. Principle of the method The Rat MMP8 solid-phase sandwich ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) is designed to measure the amount of the target bound between a matched antibody pair. A target-specific antibody has been pre-coated in the wells of the supplied microplate. Samples, standards, or controls are then added into these wells and bind to the immobilized (capture) antibody. The sandwich is formed by the addition of the second (detector) antibody, a substrate solution is added that reacts with the enzyme-antibody-target complex to produce measurable signal. The intensity of this signal is directly proportional to the concentration of target present in the original specimen. The MMP8 gene encodes matrix metalloproteinase-8, also known as collagenase-2, an enzyme belonging to the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family, which plays a pivotal role in the breakdown of extracellular matrix (ECM) components. MMP8 is primarily involved in the degradation of type I and III collagen, facilitating tissue remodeling and repair processes. This enzyme is produced by neutrophils and is active in areas of tissue inflammation and injury, where it modulates the ECM to aid in wound healing. MMP8 is implicated in various physiological processes, including embryonic development, angiogenesis, and bone remodeling. However, excessive or unregulated activity of MMP8 can lead to pathological conditions such as arthritis, periodontal disease, and cancer metastasis, where ECM degradation contributes to disease progression.
