Neutralizing Buffered Peptone Water (nBPW) is a pre enrichment medium designed for the recovery of stressed or injured bacteria such as Salmonella and Escherichia coli from food and environmental samples. The 400 mL bottle format is commonly used for whole carcass rinses in poultry testing according to USDA FSIS guidelines. The medium provides a nutrient rich, non selective environment that allows damaged cells to repair and multiply before exposure to selective enrichment media. It also contains buffering and neutralizing components that inactivate residual sanitizers such as chlorine or organic acids that may be present on food surfaces. This step improves detection sensitivity and reduces the likelihood of false negative results in food safety testing.
