Octadecyl rhodamine B chloride is a lipophilic fluorescent dye used to stain lipid membranes and study membrane dynamics. The long alkyl chain anchors the dye to membranes while the rhodamine fluorophore provides strong fluorescence in appropriate solvents. It readily forms aggregates in aqueous media, which can lead to self-quenching; handle and dilute accordingly for fluorescence assays.
